Activities as Assessments
School Science Fair
The yearly competition focuses on scientific investigation and presentation skills. Each student or group presents their projects (trifold) to a panel of judges. Students prepare a short summary about what they did and judges then get the opportunity to ask the students questions.
National Biology Competition
This competition is based out of Toronto, Canada and tests students knowledge of Biology. Schools (local and international) can register to participate. Once tests are graded the results can be viewed on the school page on the competition website.
Interactive Achievement
Students can take tests that have been created by the company or teachers can create their own. Questions that are crated or chosen are also categorized by blooms taxonomy. The tests can either be administered online or printed out. Online is best for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Tests need to be downloaded, and converted into accessible formats for blind students. This can include copy and pasting questions into a word document that can then be embossed with duxbury, or read with JAWS (screen reader). Pictures, diagrams, and charts will need to be made accessible (see Dollar Ideas). These tests can be used as benchmarks, formal assessments, or even pre and post tests. Reports can be seen and printed for classes as a whole and individual students.
Journals
Students have a question or something to answer as soon as they enter the classroom. These are kept in a journal that are then turned in at the end of the week to be graded. Each entry can earn up to 4 points:
1 - Name
2 - Date
3 - Answer
4 - Accuracy
The responses allow me to know if the students understand what was taught, where they need help, and quickly tell me how to adjust my teaching.
